2" by 1 1/2". Pewter. Imported from Scotland.
Dating back to the 16th century, the Luckenbooth Brooch was given to a bride
and was to be worn for the wedding.
It was supposed to protect the bride from harm (especially the Evil Eye)
and , later, to protect any children who might wear it.
The Brooch became very popular among the Iroquois Indians
who admired it on the Scottish immigrants.
Copies became very common in North America
and much value was placed on the Brooch’s ability to protect the wearer from harm.
Leaflet on the brooch’s history and uses and Scottish folklore on brooches is provided.
